Path Between Two Trees

On a thickly wooded path I walked
with God to have a serious talk.
My prayers were for my daughter's life.
My sweet and precious "Angels";
born with a hole in her spine;
was due to go under the knife again
for the fourteenth time!

With her kidneys failing I feared
I'd lose my heart's delight,
and so stopping at the end of a thicket
I was at the end of my line.

"O Lord, in you we trust
but this is too much for us!"
And there by a tree
I bent my knees.

He spoke everso sweetly to me
"There's a hidden trail up ahead.
I will show you a path between two trees
where snakes fear to tread!"

I looked to the left and then to the right,
wiping the tears aside, and cried;
"Lord I see no trail on either side!"
"It's where you haven't been in a while"
was His answer to my reply, adding, "Stay right!"

Although I was unsure what all He meant
I knew I was on to something.
It occurred to me as my heart then rent.
He wasn't talking about a Northenly direction!

My heart so vile had slipped in motion,
with stress and pressured commotion!
It had been a while since I had lingered
at the cross with prayerful devotion!

I lowly bowed beneight the briars
and the shrouds of prickly limbs
that stuck in my forehead brow
until it started to bleed.

I was very angry and displeased
and as I felt the blood trickling down
I wanted to curse but He whispered to me,
"It was thrones that made my crown".

With saddened eyes yet near enraged
I stood and thanked him for his sacrifice.
But then I shouted as I shook,
"OH LORD DON'T LET HER DIE!"

In my moment of erupted gale
I saw that hidden trail.
It was a trail leading from within
that revealed forbidden sins
I had concealed!

In repented prayer
I received forgiveness
for all that was hidden there.

The peace of God was in the air
and blew like a morning breeze,
and as I walked just a little piece
I saw another trail between twin trees!

Quite puzzled by it all
I passed on through
until I tripped with a fall!

It was four square and pointed
as it laid there at my feet.
A spike, half buried,
was between those trees!

In holy presence I heard his still voice say,
"I once tripped too in a path towards some trees.
I did walk that path for thee!
I treaded a path between two trees
when I hung between two thieves!"

I reached in sacred awe
to what had made me fall
and with hand upon the nail
the Holy Ghost fell!

A deepened comfort almost beyond belief
displaced my fears with joyful quakes
but when I turned, there by my foot
unexpectedly laid a snake!

I held to that old rugged spike
as it's tail began to shake!
Immobilized that it might bite
I bid it, "Fare thee well"

"Wow, I've never used those words before!
Strange I would say them now?"
"Tis not my son, for the victories been won
and it is I who speaks through thee!
Now YOU must tell it, 'Go around!' "

I laughed as it hissed and raised it's head
though my heart was racing fast.
Because I was standing in the path,
as he had said, where snakes fear to tread!

It started it's embarkment
across my sandaled feet,
but then I stood against my fears
where sin had met defeat!

In a bold release
I spoke these words in peace,
"Go around and do it quickly!
You will not tread on ME!"

It quickly raised it's body
in recoil as if to strike!
But hesitated before me
and I saw the fear in it's eyes!

It gently wagged it's tail
as if to say, "Goodbye"
then calmly lowered to the ground
and widely passed me to the side!

I watched as it quickly slithered by
from a path between two trees.
And there to my knowledge was the blood applied:
That the path we so often neglect to tread
is the very path that saves you and I.
